How can you save the earth? Generally speaking, just go green! Specifically speaking…
Here are 7 things you can do to save the earth.
1. Think before you buy.
Ask yourself if you really need that thing before purchasing it.
That dress or shirt may fit you well and is made of organic materials and natural dyes, but do you really need it? The most eco-friendly option would be to not buy it at all.
Basically, save the earth by reducing your consumption of things. Only purchase things that you really need. And make sure you consider the following tips before you actually purchase something.
2. Reuse things that you already have.
Save Earth by reusing things you already have to make whatever you need and/or want. For example, you can reuse your old denim jeans to make wine bags and pillows. You can reuse glass jars to store items. You can reuse old t-shirts to clean your house. There are so many options! Just tap into your creativity.
3. Make your own products using things you already have.
Did you know that you can make your own cleaning products using common household items like baking soda, lemons, and white vinegar? And you can make your own beauty products using natural oils and other items. Yes, you can save the earth by making your own non-toxic products.
The internet is a great resource. You can find out how to do pretty much anything!
4. Borrow and share things.
Save the earth by borrowing and/or sharing anything that you can, especially if it’s something that you’ll only use once or occasionally.
You can borrow books from your local library and tools from your neighbors. You can purchase movies digitally or borrow them from family and friends. Also, many cities have bike-sharing and car-sharing programs. You can borrow and share so many things!
5. Try repairing it before replacing it.
Shirt has a tear or missing button? Try sewing instead of buying a completely new shirt.
Did you break one of your devices? Use Google to find a solution or find somebody to repair it.
Item beyond repairable? Consider recycling it or consider the following tips.
6. Buy gently used things.
Consider buying second-hand, gently used things. You can find some really unique, nice, inexpensive items in consignment shops, thrift stores, at garage sales, on Craigslist, etc.
7. Buy eco-friendly things.
Buy things made of non-toxic and/or recycled materials. And buy things that help to conserve water, energy, and other valuable resources. Avoid items with excess packaging, like packaging with large amounts of plastic.
Purchase things that are reusable – things you don’t have to dispose of after one use. For instance, stop buying paper plates, plastic cups, and plastic eating utensils. Invest in good quality silverware, glassware and ceramic plates that you can simply wash and reuse. Instead of getting paper or plastic bags when you go shopping, use reusable shopping bags.
Also, consider long-term costs. Quality over quantity. It may be best to pay more for something upfront if it’ll decrease your chances of having to buy more things later on.
